Have You Been Shadowbanned By Instagram?

influencer Mar 12, 2020

Do you think you have been shadowbanned by Instagram?

Although Instagram claims that they do not use this practice, many users would totally disagree. And if it happens to you, your engagement will definitely decrease – in fact you may not show up at all!

WHAT IS SHADOWBANNING?

If you use hashtags on your Instagram post, and then you search for the hashtag, but don’t see your post, you could have a problem.

Shadowbanning happens when Instagram thinks you are incorrectly using a hashtag that does not correspond to the content.

For example, if you hashtag #kimkardashian on one of your photos just to try to have more people see your post, you are running a pretty high risk that Instagram is going to shut you down.

But sometimes, you really haven’t done anything wrong, and you aren’t trying to game the system, and yet you realize that your posts are not showing up.

What do you do?

HOW TO CHECK AND SEE IF YOUR INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT IS SHADOWBANNED.

There is a way to see if your posts are being monitored by Instagram. Triberr has a shadowban tester that is free (and super easy) to use. Try it here.

Just type in your Instagram handle and it will analyze your last ten posts to see if there are any problems.

I tried it out and here is what a result looks like:

And I also got this one. Notice that the hashtag #beautyblogger is red and crossed out. Apparently, this hashtag is banned. Who knew?

If you are using banned hashtags (even without knowing it), you will definitely see less engagement, because Instagram will not be showing your post or pacing it under that hashtag. We already have to deal with an algorithm that changes daily, you don’t want to cause yourself any unnecessary problems.

Plus, if Instagram has shadowbanned you, even your good posts won’t show up. Rude.

HOW DO YOU AVOID BEING SHADOWBANNED?

First of all, make sure that your hashtags really represent the content you have in your post, and don’t use too many.

Instagram allows 30 hashtags per post, but recent info supports the idea that the fewer the hashtags the better. I am going to try it out to see.

Also, it goes without saying, but don’t use bots or fake followers. Instagram can recognize when this happens, and it doesn’t like it at all!

Don’t try to game the platform, just post high quality, authentic content.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOUR ACCOUNT GETS SHADOWBANNED?

Don’t freak out. You just need to take a breather from Instagram for 2-3 days. That means don’t post, like or comment. Just steer clear completely.

You can also delete hashtags from the posts you know aren’t showing up and correct any that may appear spammy.

As a last resort, you can totally reach out to Instagram and ask for help.

If this has happened to you and you were able to correct it, let me know!
